what it measures

We’ll test the nasal swab for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus).

how we collect it

Collect your shallow, pain-free sample with the provided swab test kit and ship it back to our lab to get tested.

how we determine your results

We use the RT-PCR (Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction) method and nucleic acid to look for the RNA of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in your nose. Based on the individual nasal sample, a detectable result indicates the presence of the novel coronavirus.

when you’ll get results

You’ll get results from your coronavirus test kit in our secure, online portal in just 48 hours. Tests cannot be shipped back to the lab on Saturday or Sunday, and turnaround time does not include the weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the delivery hours?

If your zip code is eligible, ordering & delivery with Uber is available 8AM-4PM, Monday–Friday in all time zones in the US.

If you order outside of the 8AM-4PM time window, or on a Saturday or Sunday, we will ship your order instead – even if your zip code is eligible for delivery with Uber – and we’ll notify you that your order will arrive in 2 business days.

*Is 1-hour delivery guaranteed?

No. If you’re eligible for empowerDX Nasal PCR Test delivery with Uber, then your kit ordered between 8-4PM on Monday-Friday will arrive same-day. Your kit could arrive in as little as 1 hour after ordering on this webpage, but is subject to traffic, road conditions, and other delays. Please order well in advance of your need for COVID-19 at-home testing.

What is your refund / cancellation / replacement policy?

Orders that have not been processed by Uber are eligible for a 100% refund. Orders already processed by Uber are eligible for a full refund less $20 USD per test kit to cover shipping, handling, and processing fees. Please include the Kit ID information when you contact us. For orders over 30 days old and orders where results have been released, they are not eligible for any refund.

Are you really the most sensitive COVID-19 test on the market?

Yes! As of December 2020, our lab’s SARS-CoV-2 assay offers the best sensitivity of the 117 laboratories that submitted results to the FDA’s SARS-CoV-2 Reference Panel, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 180 NAAT Detectable Units/mL.

Limit of detection (LoD) is a measure of sensitivity. The higher the sensitivity, the lesser amount of virus needed to offer a positive result, which means LESS false negatives. Viracor is the name of our sister lab that performs our Nasal PCR Test.

Are you a CLIA certified clinical laboratory?

Absolutely! Our clinical labs are CLIA certified. CLIA stands for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. This means that The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulate all our clinical tests and make sure they meet rigorous quality standards. Here’s a breakdown on CLIA certification by the FDA.

However, our PCR mask testing lab is not CLIA certified because it’s not a clinical lab – it’s an environmental testing lab. Here’s their accreditation: “ISO / IEC 17025:2005 Certificate Number: Biological 2918.04”.

Does my kit expire?

We encourage you to use your kit within 60 days to avoid any issues with a potentially expired kit. All test kits must be registered and returned to the lab before the kit’s expiration date labeled on the outside of the kit. Any samples sent back to the lab after the listed expiration date will not be processed. We are unable to provide a replacement kit due to expiration.

If you can’t find your kit expiration date, reach out to Customer Care for clarity.

What if my nose swab is missing from my kit?

Please contact Customer Care if you receive a kit that’s missing a nasal swab. We’ll be sure to send you another one at no additional cost to you. You CANNOT use any other swab or Q-tip as a replacement. The lab will NOT process your sample if you use a different swab or tube.

What if my plastic saline tube is missing from my kit?

Please contact Customer Care if you receive a kit that’s missing a plastic saline tube. We’ll mail you another one at no additional cost to you. You CANNOT use any other tube as a replacement. The lab will NOT process your sample if you use a different swab or tube.

What if my plastic saline tube is dry or contains no saline?

Please contact Customer Care if you receive a kit that has a dry saline tube. We’ll mail you another one at no additional cost to you. You CANNOT use any other tube as a replacement. The lab will NOT process your sample if you use a different swab or tube.

Can I pay with insurance?

You sure can, as long as you have been exposed to COVID-19, have COVID-19 symptoms, or you’re in an area with community spread. Simply use the “Insurance pay” button above. We’ll bill your insurance company for you once your results are ready. Under the CARES Act, insurance companies are required to reimburse this service without any cost-sharing requirements when testing is done in accordance with CDC guidelines. We ask that you do not send in more than one sample every 14 days when billing for insurance.

However, we can’t guarantee that your insurance company will cover the cost of your nasal PCR kit. Please check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.

How do I cancel my insurance-pay order?

Please contact our Customer Care team if you need to cancel any order. You don’t need to cancel your nasal PCR kit order if your kit has already shipped to your address. Insurance is only billed when your results are processed by the lab. You’re welcome to keep your nasal PCR kit for later use, or you can dispose of it.

What should I do if my insurance company isn't listed?

When ordering your kit through insurance, we provide a drop-down list to search for your specific insurance provider. If you do not see your insurance provider listed, then select “My Insurance Provider is not listed” and you will be able to enter your insurance information as it is listed on your card.

Is it possible to get a false positive?

As of December 2020, our lab’s SARS-CoV-2 assay offers the best sensitivity of the 118 laboratories that have submitted results to FDA’s SARS-CoV-2 Reference Panel, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 180 NAAT Detectable Units/mL. We didn’t have any false positives during our FDA EUA validation study. It is possible to have a positive test result and not be infected with COVID-19, but still have the SARS-CoV-2 virus in your nose.

If you have received a positive PCR test, we encourage you to follow CDC guidelines and have those around you get a PCR test as well.

Will my COVID-19 vaccine cause my test to result in a false positive?

No. The COVID-19 vaccine will not cause a SARS-CoV-2 PCR test to be positive. Any positive PCR result after the vaccine should be treated as a true positive. Please refer to your healthcare provider for more information about the vaccine and its interaction with PCR testing.
